Catalytic Polymerizations Research Group: The Merna Group

Welcome to the website of the Jan Merna group at the Department of Polymers, University of Chemistry and Technology Prague.
We investigate catalytic polymerizations of olefins with the goal to prepare precise polyolefins with controlled molar mass, branching, topology, stereoregularity or functionality. We are also interested in use of non-traditional feedstocks for polymer synthesis such as carbon dioxide.
The research of the group mainly focuses on:
  • Synthesis of olefin block copolymers by living/controlled polymerization techniques
  • Design of new polymerization catalysts
  • Synthesis of polyolefin with non-linear architectures
  • Copolymerization of olefins with polar monomers

Research topics

Research is oriented towards synthesis of tailor-made polymers with defined chain length, molar mass distribution, branching of chain, end-groups, polymer topology and polymer stereoregularity using the methods of living/controlled polymerizations.

Catalyst development and synthesis of novel polyolefin based materials is investigated.

Laboratory of Circular Polymers: Preventing Plastics to be Wasted

Laboratory of Circular Polymers (LCP) is a joint laboratory devoted to the various approaches towards searching for a solutions how to avoid plastics waste by making it a source for new polymer manufacture.

At the moment the laboratory is lead by Prof. Merna  but we are looking for junior group leader with main focus on this topic.

Processability testing of rubbers and plastics, rubber vulcanization, polymer blends, rubber recycling. The most recently we are focused on

  • Relation of Natural rubber processing characteristics with visco-elastic and other data.
  • Effect of processing oil type on properties of rubber compounds and vulcanisates.
  • Tire scrap recycling
  • Modification of rubber compounds with waste tyre rubber powders

Application of fine rubber powders originated from waste tyres in the production of fresh rubber compounds. Influence of milling process, powder pre-treatment, particle morphology and concentration on the processing behavior of the rubber compound and mechanical properties of the cured rubber.
